12VOLT BATTERIES

Matt) and Wet Cell Lead Acid 12volt Batteries. First before you start to compare the prices of the AGM, Gel and
Wet Cell batteries have a little read below about the end cost savings of the AGM style battery.
Lets look at some of the direct advantages of these AGM batteries over Wet Cell and Gel batteries.

AGM, or Absorbed Glass Mat Batteries
A newer type of sealed battery uses "Absorbed Glass Mats", or AGM between the plates. This is a very fine fiber
Boron-Silicate glass mat. These type of batteries have all the advantages of gelled, but can take much more
abuse. We sell the ALCO and Century AGM batteries.
These are also called "starved electrolyte", as the mat is about 95% saturated rather than fully soaked. That also
means that they will not leak acid even if broken.

AGM batteries have several advantages over both gelled and flooded, at about the same cost as gelled:
Since all the electrolyte (acid) is contained in the glass mats, they cannot spill, even if broken. This also means
that since they are non-hazardous, the shipping costs are lower. In addition, since there is no liquid to freeze and
expand, they are practically immune from freezing damage.

Nearly all AGM batteries are "recombinant" - what that means is that the Oxygen and Hydrogen recombine
INSIDE the battery. These use gas phase transfer of oxygen to the negative plates to recombine them back into
water while charging and prevent the loss of water through electrolysis.
The recombining is typically 99% efficient, so almost no water is lost, meaning these batteries will out perform
and out live any other battery on the market.

The charging voltages are the same as for any standard battery, which in most cases means there is no need for
any special adjustments or problems with incompatible chargers or charge controls, but a newer charger such as
the CTEK will allow the AGM to live its life to the fullest.
Since the internal resistance is extremely low, there is almost no heating of the battery even under heavy charge
and discharge currents. The ALCO AGM batteries have no charge or discharge current limits, this is the
advantage of the ALCO battery to other AGM batteries on the market.
AGM's have a very low self-discharge - from 1% to 3% per month is usual. This means that they can sit in storage
for much longer periods without needing charging, again making this type of battery out perform standard
batteries. The ALCO batteries can be almost fully recharged (to 95%) even after 30 days of being totally
discharged, a wet cell or Gel battery would be a door stop after that type of punishment.

AGM's do not have any liquid to spill, and even under severe overcharge conditions hydrogen emission is far
below the 4% max specified for aircraft and enclosed spaces. The plates in AGM's are tightly packed and rigidly
mounted, and will withstand shock and vibration better than any standard battery.
Even with all the advantages listed above, there is still a place for the standard flooded deep cycle battery. AGM's
will cost around  2 time the price of standard flooded batteries of the same capacity.
In many installations, where the batteries are set in an area where you don't have to worry about fumes or
leakage, a standard or industrial deep cycle is a better economic choice.
AGM batteries main advantages are no maintenance, completely sealed against fumes, Hydrogen, or leakage,
non-spilling even if they are broken.

Gelled Electrolyte Batteries
Gelled batteries, or "Gel Cells" contain acid that has been "gelled" by the addition of Silica Gel, turning the acid
into a solid mass that looks like gooey Jell-O. The advantage of these batteries is that it is impossible to spill acid
even if they are broken.
However, there are several disadvantages. One is that they must be charged at a slower rate (C/20) to prevent
excess gas from damaging the cells. They cannot be fast charged on a conventional automotive charger or they
may be permanently damaged.
This is not usually a problem with solar electric systems, but if an auxiliary generator or inverter bulk charger is
used, current must be limited to the manufacturers specifications.
Some other disadvantages of gel cells is that they must be charged at a lower voltage (2/10th's less) than flooded
or AGM batteries.
If overcharged, voids can develop in the gel which will never heal, causing a loss in battery capacity. In hot
climates, water loss can be enough over 2-4 years to cause premature battery death.
It is for this and other reasons that we only use GEL as an addition to existing battery banks.
The newer AGM (absorbed glass mat) batteries have all the advantages (and then some) of gelled, with none of
the disadvantages.

Wet Cell Batteries
A conventional Wet Cell battery is well priced and is capable of being swapped into the car in the event of the car’
s battery failing. Against this it may struggle to recover in the event of being flattened after a week of constant
use. This is a consequence of its design. They were built to be maintained at close to full charge by the alternator
of a motor vehicle.
A deep cycle battery is designed to fully recharge from flat with little compromise to its life expectancy. This has
to do with the construction of the plates within the battery itself.  On the other hand they have less cranking
power than a car battery and may not be able to start your engine if called upon to do so, but this may result in
shortening the life span of the battery as they are not designed of large current draws. They are also more
expensive than a standard battery, buy less than AGM or GEL.
An issue with both these batteries is where to put them? They need external ventilation to expel gases and
access for maintenance. Often you will find RV batteries housed under a bed or seat box, or in a dead spot in the
front corner of the caravan utilising available space and this is not an area which these batteries suit as
ventilation is needed to the outside and you will also need to check fluid levels periodically so access must be
practical.
Wet Cell batteries fail prematurely because fluid levels have been ignored due to difficult access.
A Sealed Wet Cell Battery still needs to be vented like standard batteries they are just classified as SEALED for
low maintenance reasons, meaning that they have no removable caps to inspect the battery acid, they are not
considered sealed like the AGM or Gell, if you where to tip them over the acid would spill out everywhere,
hence they are not SEALED just maintenance free.

Inverter Generators
Over the past few years there have been many generator brands entering the Australian
market, some are very, very cheap, just barley meeting the Australian standards and some
been sold on Internet sites like e-bay and gumtree don't carry any Australian licencing at all.
We know that the good brands are expensive and for the aging caravaner's who has limited
funds, trying to save money by doing free camping these cheap, cheap generators are inviting.
Unfortunately licensed, quality brands cost what they cost, you are basically buying a product
that is built to kill you if not constructed to Australian standards, this is a point that the
people selling unlicensed brands don't seem to understand or really care about.
So in large if you are considering buying a cheap generator from a camping show or off the
Internet make sure you look for three things that is visible on the unit:





1.  The Directive on the restriction of the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and
electronic equipment 2002/95/EC (commonly referred to as the Restriction of Hazardous
Substances Directive or RoHS)





2. The Consumer Electronics brand, means it has been licensed for sale within the country.
3. Some type of reconcilable warranty where a company in Australia is used.

A power inverter, or inverter, is an electrical power converter that changes direct current (DC) to alternating
current (AC), the converted AC can be at any required voltage and frequency with the use of appropriate
transformers, switching, and control circuits.

Solid-state inverters have no moving parts and are used in a wide range of applications, from small switching
power supplies in computers, to large electric utility high-voltage direct current applications that transport bulk
power. Inverters are commonly used to supply AC power from DC sources such as solar panels or batteries.

The inverter performs the opposite function of a rectifier. The electrical inverter is a high-power electronic
oscillator. It is so named because early mechanical AC to DC converters were made to work in reverse, and thus
were "inverted", to convert DC to AC

Types

Square wave
The square wave output has a high harmonic content, not suitable for certain AC loads such as motors or
transformers. Square wave units were the pioneers of inverter development.

Modified sine wave
The output of a modified square wave, quasi square, or modified sine wave inverter is similar to a square wave
output except that the output goes to zero volts for a time before switching positive or negative. It is simple and
low cost (~$0.10USD/Watt) and is compatible with most electronic devices, except for sensitive or specialized
equipment, for example certain laser printers, fluorescent lighting, audio equipment.

Most AC motors will run off this power source albeit at a reduction in efficiency of approximately 20%

Multilevel
A multilevel inverter synthesizes a desired voltage from several levels of direct current voltage as inputs. The
advantages of using multilevel topology include reduction of power ratings of power devices and lower cost.
There are three topologies - diode clamped inverter, flying capacitor inverter and cascaded inverter.

Pure sine wave
A pure sine wave inverter produces a nearly perfect sine wave output (less than 3% total harmonic distortion)
that is essentially the same as utility-supplied grid power. Thus it is compatible with all AC electronic devices.
This is the type used in grid-tie inverters. Its design is more complex, and costs more per unit power.

DANGERS OF INVERTERS
Time and time again we see caravans coming in where the customer has installed an Inverter into the caravan,
there is a power lead from the inverter is joining into the 240volt system of the caravan, powering the entire
240volt system of the caravan.
THIS IS A LIFE THREATENING SITUATION.
The caravan requires an earth, this earth comes from the 15amp lead you use to power the caravan.
If a fault occurs with either the 240volt wiring or an appliance being connected into the 240volt wiring there are
two safety features built into the wiring:

1.The earth wiring itself, the earth provides a ground potential of all metal objects connected to the caravan's
240volt wiring, YES that means the metal cladding on the outside of your caravan aswell.

2. The RCDMCD, a residual current device cutout device stopping the flow of power to earth should a
electrocution occur, this does not work if being powered from and Inverter.

In short an Inverter should only be connect from a 12volt outlet directly to small appliances, like a phone
charger, computer, satellite TV unit or the TV itself, anything with an earth pin on the plug should not be
connected.

RULE OF THUMB - Anything with a metal body which has the 240volt power lead connecting it directly to the
power point like a toaster or kettle, should never be connected to an Inverter.
